KRONOS PLAYOUT is a public-cloud playout service for 24-hour internet delivery, including simulcast of terrestrial television, satellite broadcasting, and cable TV.

Features

In addition to conventional time-based scheduling, KRONOS PLAYOUT leverages SCTE-35 splice_insert and time_signal — the standard used for ad insertion and blackout slating in live streams — making it the only solution that switches inputs with frame accuracy at a latency of just a few seconds.

Frame-accurate video switching

By advancing events based on the SCTE-35 packet information in the live feed, KRONOS PLAYOUT achieves frame-accurate synchronization with broadcast. Using STD-B39 (S5) signals as triggers at ad break points, SCTE-104 signals inserted into the baseband are embedded by the encoder as SCTE-35 signals; the playout then locates the video frame specified by the pts_time defined in splice_time and switches the video (event) on exactly that frame. Even when multiple live feeds are input, the relative pts_time offsets are calculated from each feed's SCTE-35 signals, keeping the live feeds synchronized with one another as well.

Broadcast-grade capabilities such as emergency operations and multi-route scheduling

For emergency playout operations, cut-ins, time shifts, and other actions can be performed through the GUI or API. Asset switch points are retained during a cut-in, so a time shift can automatically resume delivery from where it left off as a new event — forcing the schedule back open. You can also build the multi-route schedules broadcasting requires, such as extended schedules for live sports coverage and alternate (plan-B) programming. When building these complex schedules, integration with the broadcaster's master control facilities and traffic systems allows scheduling data to be imported automatically.

Scalability and availability unique to cloud playout

Taking full advantage of running in the cloud, KRONOS PLAYOUT scales with your needs — adding or removing live feeds and output destinations, and expanding the storage that holds your media assets. Playout instance specifications can also be scaled flexibly, for example to support higher-quality live feeds or output video. In addition, cloud resources are made redundant to deliver high availability.

Integration with STREAKS

Connecting to STREAKS, our OVP product, enables program information to be shared; DVR and archives cut at frame-accurate program start and end points using the time_signal of SCTE-35 signals issued by KRONOS; and ad information to be shared for smooth use of STREAKS-specific features such as SSAI prefetching. The output stream path between KRONOS and STREAKS never traverses the public internet, minimizing transmission latency and the risk of packet loss.
